Dear Mr Dempsey,

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION (SCOTLAND) ACT 2002

Thank you for your request for the provision of the following information.
I am writing to request the number of people who have died in NHS Ayrshire and Arran Hospitals from 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2020.

To clarify, I have seen the figures published online but I know they cover mortality rates within 28 days of a positive test, so death could have been due to other causes. I would like the exact number of deaths in 2020 where COVID-19 alone has been written on the death certificate.

Response:
According to the NRS Scotland dataset, for the specified time period, there have been 338 deaths where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate, with 292 where COVID-19 is cited as the primary cause of death. Of these deaths, there have been 11 where no other conditions are mentioned apart from COVID-19. This number includes both NHS Ayrshire & Arran (NHSAA) residents who have died in NHSAA hospitals and non NHSAA residents who have died within NHSAA hospitals.

Please also see the link below for the Weekly and Monthly Data on Births and Deaths Registered in Scotland. Scroll down to the ‘Deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19) in Scotland’ link and select. Click on ‘Data and Charts’.

If our decision is unchanged following a review and you remain dissatisfied with this, you then have the right to make a formal appeal to the Scottish Information Commissioner at www.itspublicknowledge.info/Appeal

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further advice or assistance.
